Marketing has changed in this era of streaming video and social media, and the following are some of the roles which have emerged as the industry continues to become more digital

In this digital age, consumers have a great deal of power. What they see and hear, and who they interact with, are all accessible at the tips of their fingers. With a quick scroll, skip, or swipe all that separates companies from them, making marketing professionals, particularly those with an affinity for digital, very much in demand.

Corporations, start-ups, social enterprises, and even government institutions, are keen on having people on their team who know how to sift through the ever-increasing population of digital users, pinpoint their exact target market, and develop strategies that will allow them to not only engage with that market, but also provide the most informed buying, media, and overall consumer experience.

As vast and varied as the digital space continues to become, marketing roles are similarly evolving. The more traditional marketing jobs of old have changed to include digital aspects, and some newer, standalone jobs and niches have also emerged as a result of continued technological advancements.

If you’ve been considering building a marketing career in this digital era, the following are some of the roles in the field which you can consider.

Marketing Intern

As the marketing industry continues to expand and be redefined, working as an intern or associate is an effective way to not only get your foot in the door but also learn and understand the various aspects of marketing and maybe also decide if there is a niche within it that you would like to focus on.

While interns are often responsible for only low impact tasks, it is often any and all, including social media, written content, design, brand marketing, and even traditional media and print. Marketing Internships are almost always available in most companies, be it in traditional businesses or in agencies that actually offer marketing and other related services.

These include companies with widely recognized brands, such as Inquirer Mobile and FoodPanda Philippines, among several others, who are presently welcoming Marketing Interns to their fold.

Social Media-Related Roles

Although social media is but one aspect of digital marketing, it is often the most associated with it. Potential consumers are after all the easiest to find on social media, and the variety of platforms that exist and continue to emerge also continues to provide companies with multiple avenues to pinpoint and reach out to their target market.

The continued increase in usage and popularity of the likes of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest makes competing for relevance on social media an important marketing endeavor, as it is on these and other similar platforms where most users go to discover, keep up with, and even promote brands they like and get recommendations on products and services, on top of finding news and entertainment (which companies also advertise through).

Establishing and maintaining a significant social media presence is a full-time job, and is a reason why many companies such as GMA News Media and the One Mega Group, among many others, employ marketing professionals to fulfill the roles of community managers, social media analysts, and social media marketers.

Marketing Specialist

In a nutshell, Marketing Specialists’ main responsibility is to help their company understand which sells/resounds the most to their target market. They collect market intelligence on product preference, customers’ attitude, competitors and market opportunities to develop promotional campaigns, media placements, and merchandising initiatives, among others.

They are expected to be familiar with, and commonly work, all communication methods, including email, website, webinar, digital ad, social media, and traditional print formats. Marketing Specialists may also work with sales, marketing, management, development, and product research teams to launch new products, reintroduce existing lines, and retire non- performing offerings.

Marketing Specialist roles have a presence in all types of companies and industries, and opportunities are presently available in organizations like ABS-CBN, Lalamove Philippines, and the PJ Lhuillier Group of Companies.

Marketing Manager

Marketing Manager roles depend on the size, structure, and goals of the company, but the core responsibility for most is to implement and report on marketing initiatives. The job is centered on the what (as in what actions to be executed), as what marketing directors do, which is explore the why and the how of those actions.

As mentioned, marketing has branched out to include various aspects, and as such, Marketing Manager roles have become just as varied. Some companies hire Marketing Managers to take part in all aspects of the business’ marketing while others may employ specialists who prioritize a specific aspect. These roles include Digital Marketing Manager that is, obviously, for digital; Brand Marketing Manager who, in turn, works more on the companies brand initiatives; or an Email Marketing Manager, who is focused most on marketing initiatives done through email.

Similar to most marketing roles, Marketing Manager opportunities can be found in differing businesses and the likes of the Travel Book, Uniqlo, and Zen Rooms presently looking to fill this role on their teams.

Creative Roles (Graphic Designer, Copywriter, Videographer, etc.)

Creativity has always been important in the marketing industry, as it is what enables brands to deliver engaging and entertaining campaigns that help them stand out from their competitors. This is even truer in the era of digital, as having more avenues to reach customers has meant an increased need to create and produce marketing content and collateral on a consistent basis.

Graphic designers, copywriters, photographers, and videographers, among others, have since incorporated digital into their skills, and further adapt to any changes that emerge from the continued advancement of communication and technology. Companies, on the other hand, continue to look to creative professionals to be a foundation in their brand and marketing initiatives by not only making use of their creative skills but also by understanding the preferences of the consumers using different digital mediums.

In some instances, companies like to employ marketing professionals who possess skills and experiences in different creative fields, while in others, they opt to hire those who specialize in a certain role. Among the latter which is presently available now is a Copywriter position at SM Retail, and a Graphic Designer role at Canva Solutions.
